Area Task Group
The Foyle Interagency Partnership (FIAP) on domestic
violence was set up in 1997 in response to Government
initiative to tackle domestic violence through the development
of interagency partnerships throughout Northern Ireland
in each Health and Social Services Trust.
Working in inter-agency partnerships has been identified
as one of the main ways to respond effectively and efficiently
to those who are experiencing domestic violence.
Our Mission Statement Is…
“To create a safer
community through challenging individuals and agencies
to work inclusively and collaboratively to eliminate
domestic violence and to promote a non-violent society
for us all.”
Our Key Objectives Are…
- To develop formal relationships, policies, protocols
and procedures between members of the Foyle Interagency
Partnership on domestic violence;
- To increase public awareness of domestic violence
and build community capacity to respond to the needs
of those affected by domestic violence;
- To develop and formalise training provision (accredited
and non-accredited) in relation to domestic violence
to all public, community and voluntary sector partners
on the Inter-Agency Partnership;
- Commission research to ascertain support needs
of those experiencing domestic violence and identify
gaps in current provision.
Domestic Violence is...
“Threatening behaviour, violence or abuse
(psychological, physical, verbal, sexual, financial
or emotional) inflicted on one person by another where
they are or have been intimate partners or family members
irrespective of gender or sexual orientation.”

Domestic violence is a crime that affects all aspects
of our community. It requires intervention from a wide
range of organisations and individuals including the
voluntary, community, public and statutory sector.
FIAP represents key agencies responding to domestic
violence in the Foyle Trust area including the Derry
City Council, Limavady Borough Council and Strabane
District Council.

Facts And Fears
- 1 in 3 women in Northern Ireland experience domestic
violence. 2 women are seriously assaulted every day
in Northern Ireland
- The Foyle area has the highest number of reported
incidents of domestic violence in Northern Ireland
to the PSNI
- The PSNI regionally respond to over 20,000 incidents
of domestic violence every year
- The following domestic violence offences occurred
in the Limavady Area from April 2004 to March 2005:
392 domestic violence incidents, 1 attempted murder,
1 wounding/GBH, 160 AOABH/common assault, 2 threat
or conspiracy to murder
- Around 3,000 women and children are accommodated
in refuges in Northern Ireland every year
- Information and advice was given to 31,887 individuals
in Northern Ireland in the year 2002 - 2003 (NIWAF)

- Makes you feel fearful that you will do/ say something
“wrong”
- Makes you believe that it is your fault
- Is jealous, and accuses you of being unfaithful

- Threatens to take custody and/or not allow you
to see your children
